This is also a time for Vermonters and especially Kingdomers to strut our stuff. The first few weeks of Fall bring several charming Fall Festivals and the kick-off event was the Burke Fall Festival in East, Burke Vermont.  The Burke Festival ,like many others, have a potpourri of food, crafts, music, animals, yard sales and activities for children. In the rolling farm hills of historic Peacham, VT is a charming antiques and uniques shop run by a lovely couple, Paul and Jean Evans. P.G. Evans Country Home Provisions is situated just off the beaten path (the Danville-Peacham Rd) in an early 1800′s mill house. They boast “an eclectic blend of country furniture and embellishments for your home” and they don’t disappoint. The shop has a wide variety of things to help countrify your home, including furniture (showcasing the hand-made work of Paul) and all sorts of knick-knacks that illustrate theirs love for a good antique hunt and an eye for interesting pieces.

There is something for everyone but your bound to find a bargain. I picked up a large weathered carpenter’s toolbox for just $23, something I had seen at other places for well over $200. The best part of P.G. Evans Country Home Provisions is Paul and Jean themselves, who were kind and warm and we found ourselves chatting for quite a while.  This is a perfect edition to a lazy day road trip through the Northeast Kingdom countryside.

Don’t forget to pick up some of Jean’s hand-made soap.

The Kingdom Trails has really become the one of the hottest spots for mountain biking in the Northeast Kingdom and in the whole of North America. Geocaching in the Kingdom

Have GPS? Love Adventure? Then geocaching could be for you. What is geocaching you ask? It is hide-and-seek treasure hunting and it is happening right here in the Northeast Kingdom. picture-3Have GPS? Love Adventure? Then geocaching could be for you. What is geocaching you ask? It is hide-and-seek treasure hunting and it is happening right here in the Northeast Kingdom. How it works: Someone stashes a cache (pronounced cash) and pinpoints its whereabouts with GPS and uploads the information to geocaching.com. Adventurers use geocaching.com and GPS to find these hidden treasures. Caches can be all kinds of things from time capsules, random objects, and even structured games. The only rule of geocaching is if you take something from a stash you have to put something in.

It seems like fun to me…wanna play?  Here are some geocaches in the Kindgom http://www.geocaching.com.

A Northeast Kingdom outdoor staple finds itself in the limelight once more – The Kingdom Trails. Situated in the Shadow of Burke Mountain, in East Burke, VT, Kingdom Trails has some of the best mountain biking trails in the country and has become THE mountain biking destination in the Northeast. The article in Vermont Life magazine takes a historical look at this one Winter time town, and how the Kingdom Trails made East Burke into a four season destination.

In 1994, a group of local citizens founded the nonprofit Kingdom Trails Association, and the transformation of East Burke clicked into high gear. Led by Worth, mountain bikers built dozens of miles of trails on a combination of state and private land. (Strikingly, most of the land was private; 60 contiguous landowners agreed to the building of the trails.) The trails were carefully planned and designed, and once built, well-maintained. The network grew into more than 100 miles of trails, which today are regarded as some of the best in the country. – Vermont Life – Autumn 2009

Even with an off-summer this year East Burke was hopping with mountain bikers from all over.

The 2009 Danville Fair

There is an old Northeast Kingdom joke that once the Danville Fair is over it could start snowing at any time. So far so good. This early August event,  its 79th year, has been a pillar of summer time in Danville, VT, and the surrounding Caledonia County communities. For most Caledonians the Danville Fair is the unofficial start to fair season, with the three big county fairs (Orleans County Fair – Aug. 19th-23rd | Caledonia County Fair – Aug. 26th-30th | Champlain Valley Fair – Aug. 29th – Sept. 7th) following behind it.

The Danville Fair, small in comparison to the big county fairs, is an intimate occasion. With a parade focused on local farmers and associations you get a great feel for the community, and a taste of their dry and sometimes sardonic humor. One parade “float” was a boy pedaling a toy tractor that pulls a sign reading “With the low price of milk and the high costs production, this is the only tractor we can afford to run!!”

You run into friends that you saw yesterday or  haven’t seen since the last fair. Live music, Bingo, high calorie fair food, great weather and the usual assortment of games and rides made the 79th Danville Fair a great Kingdom summer day.

Photo by Paul Keleher If you want a snapshot of historic Northeast Kingdom Vermont then take a drive through Craftsbury Commons, in Orleans County. If you want to also leave with a trunk full of antiques and Vermont hand-made “uniquities” then go when the Annual Antiques & Uniques Festival is going on.

682Craftsbury The festival, in part to support Vermont Children’s Aid Society, offers all the antiques and crafts you can shake a turn-of-the-century stick at, but also live music, great food, and activities for the kids makes this a fantastic Northeast Kingdom day trip. You want to get there early so that you don’t miss out on great deals. We made this an afternoon trip and were a little bummed that we didn’t get to spend more time there. The people were really nice while we were still rummaging through their stands while they were trying to pack, and everyone was really friendly.

Craftsbury is such a unique town that you just might want to make a weekend trip out of it. Enjoy the tranquil beauty of this Vermont gem by staying right on the common at The Inn on the Common, 1162 North Craftsbury Road Craftsbury Common, VT 802-586-9619

Remember to bring cash!

Slow down, you won’t want to miss this!  If you happen to be driving through the town of Glover, VT you just might. Nestled in the backyard behind an old brick house is a little red barn – just before the bridge. Yep, that’s right, the one you just passed. Turn around a pull into the driveway. You have arrived at the Red Sky Trading Co.

Owned by Doug and Cheri Safford the Red Sky Trading Co offers some of the tastiest homemade doughnuts, “free-trade”coffee, and assortment of homemade jams. Relax in an Adirondack chair (also for sale) and enjoy your refreshments listening to the Barton River bubble by or browse around the “Shabby Shack” for some antiques.

Hang out long enough and you might get a chance to meet Doug or Cheri. I had a chance to chat with Doug for a bit. He was happy to share the history of the place and talk about how their recent article in Vemont Life came to be. Don’t worry if you don’t see anyone around, payment is based on the honor system (so bring cash).

Typical Vermont, a big splash of style, and some high calorie treats make this a must see on any Northeast Kingdom roadtrip.

The Kingdom Trails

kingdomtrailslogoWhen you think “Vermont”, you might think about sleepy Sunday mornings at a local bed & breakfast, maple syrup, or the Breakfast Skillet at the Miss Lydonville Diner- but anyone that has visited the Northeast Kingdom (or at least seen pictures) visualizes a rugged outdoor terrain that is both beautiful and imposing. The rambling hills call to you, beckoning you to commune with nature and to find yourself, but you’re no Lewis & Clarke, and like many tourists you may have only enjoyed the view from the scenic overlooks off of I-91.  Take off your chinos, switch off your iPhone, and strap on a bike helmet, enjoying the Northeast Kingdom just got a whole lot easier- it’s time to hit the Kingdom Trails.

The Kingdom Trails Association, located in East Burke, VT., spearheaded a project back in 1994 to open up access to the Northeast Kingdom countryside to everyone (assuming you can ride a bike). There are over 100 miles of groomed trails that meander through the Vermont countryside. There is something for everyone from average cruiser to your hardcore mud divers.

Snow bunnies will appreciate that the Kingdom Trails also maintains a winter system for cross country skiing.

More about the Kingdom Trails in the seasons to come!
